Gunboat 66 Catamaran: “SugarDaddy” Saves The Day At Fanning Island
Tweet Many visitors will remember Gunboat Catamaran’s famous 66′ build, “Sugar Daddy,” a past winner of the Heineken Regatta in the Caribbean. Owners Bruce and Nora Slayden took their prized possession on an ocean “wanderlust” with a bunch of their family to the North pacific — the first GunBoat to venture into this sprawling ocean. For a while the family maintained an entertaining blog and then went off the ‘web’ radar around March 25, 2009 with their final post “The REESSTTT of the story”. A recent blog entry by Kym & Stu, a monohull couple sailing back from the United States to Australia, briefly mention an encounter with Bruce and…

Tim & Susan Mahoney cross Atlantic on Knysna 480 catamaran
Tweet Tim and Susan Mahoney recently completed a 6,000 mile trip from Cape Town to the Caribbean putting their Kynsna Catamaran 480 “Flamingo” through some serious stress-testing including reaching speeds of 19.6 knots while sliding down the face of a big ocean wave. Tim and Susan Mahoney are the Catamaran Marquee International dealers for North and Central America and launched “Flamingo” on 2nd February at the Knysna Waterfront. Their “log book” on the Knysna Catamarans website says the ultimate goal of their cross-ocean voyage was to reach Grenada in time to fly to Seattle for their daughter’s college graduation and allow their anxious crew to get home as well. 105ft Racing Trimaran Eyes Cape To Rio Race in 2011
Tweet The Royal Cape Yacht Club reports in their May 2010 newsletter that the legendary Cape 2 Rio Race scheduled for January 2011 has already generated 14 requests for entry forms including interest from Oman Sailing and their 105ft racing Trimaran, Majan. Named Majan, after the ancient name for Oman, Oman Sail’s new flagship, reportedly is a speed demon with a crew member commenting: “Majan is incredible: we moved from 20 – 30 knots in one gust of wind. We now look forward to showing the world what she can do!” And, the world better watch out — especially other teams in the Cape To Rio race! The Royal Cape…

Namibian Catamaran Day Charters in Walvis Bay
Tweet It’s interesting to see catamaran charters slowly spread through Southern Africa. Sun Sail Catamarans (No relation to Sunsail in the U.S) offer daily dolphin cruises out of the Walvis Bay Lagoon, Namibia. The cruise takes place 2 hours before sunset and explores Bird Island and Seal Colonies at Pelican Point. Oysters and Champagne are served at Sunset and the cruises are N$40 per person. Private Charters are also offered. While details are hard to come by it appears that the catamarans are about 50 feet in length and seat 50 passengers. Looks like they have about four in operation. They appear to have purchased their cats from a Cape…
